Program Content

Transformative Leadership and Innovation for Competitiveness in Africa will be an intensive week-long program that examines the strategies and measures needed to align technological trends with development policy and corporate growth objectives, focusing on how to design and implement innovation policies for economic development. It will be structured around three intersecting core principles: development challenges are increasingly global and transnational; solutions to development challenges are cross-sectoral; and entrepreneurship and innovation is important to comprehensive economic advancement and sustainable development.

Participants will be immersed in classroom sessions, group work, and case study discussions centering on practical approaches to problem solving. The sessions emphasize interactive learning among leading professionals with diverse backgrounds and interests. A range of topics will be addressed per given session, from amongst the following:

21st Century Competitiveness of Nations and Corporations

Principles, Global best practices in strategy, policies for developing countries (African Corporations and countries with a tilt towards Continental free-trade zones and markets).

Scientific and Technological Frontiers

Identify key scientific and technological trends in emerging fields such as information technologies, biotechnology, AI, IoT, and material sciences; map the frontiers of technologies innovation and their potential for application in development

Innovation Systems and Clusters

Examine trends and show how technical change and innovation are products of interactive learning involving government, industry, and academia; identify new economic roles for institutions of higher learning and research.

Infrastructure

Explore the linkages between infrastructure services, logistics, and technological innovation in development; learn how to leverage expertise in a wide range of sectors, including defense, to contribute to infrastructure development as a foundation for technological innovation.

Information and Communications Technologies

Map emerging and novel applications of information and communications technologies in development; explore their impact on other technological sectors.

Medical Technologies

Review advances in medical technologies and their implications for development; provide practical examples of recent and emerging medical technologies.

Agricultural Technologies, including Biotechnology

Assess the frontiers of agricultural technologies and identify their role in addressing food and agriculture challenges; emphasize the role of entrepreneurship in innovation and sustainable development.

Green Technologies

Examine the role of technological innovation in addressing ecological challenges, with particular emphasis on climate change.

Digital Transformations

Distinctive digital capabilities is increasingly a must for both short and long-term corporate viability and delivery of public services. This course will assess methodology for driving significant growth, innovation, and organizational success through system-wide digital transformation. Leaders will learn how to (1) identify and diagnose digital gaps, (2) create an appropriate action plan to develop a distinctive digital ecosystem and accompanying capabilities.

Energy, Oil & Gas, Mining

Topics include : Fundamentals of the global Oil and Gas Industry, Technology, Value Chain and Geopolitics of Oil, Growth Challenges for the Energy Industry, National Oil Company Strategies and Challenges, Strategic and Financial Decision Making

Continental mobility and Agility

Developing a regional or continental framework for a market or community requires a continental mindset that transcends national borders. This course will review African efforts at regional integration, implications for regional business and human development, and assess how leaders can adapt and thrive in new (broader) environments.

Advanced Management for Oil & Gas Industry Executives

covers a broad set of tools spanning strategy formulation and execution, set within the context of the oil and gas business. You will also gain insights into the leadership skills, collaboration skills and influencing skills that can complement technical acumen.

Examine the role of science and technology in a rapidly changing international trade system and its implication for regional and global trade and finance, and notions of markets and boundaries.

Managing Technological Risks

Analyze the scientific and socioeconomic risks associated with the introduction and adoption of new technologies.

Science and Technology Advice

Explore the role of high-level advice on how to leverage emerging technologies for development; review the impact of policies in other areas such as finance, trade, property rights, sectorial development, and regional economic integration.

Science and Technology Diplomacy

Assess the implications of rapid technological innovation for international diplomacy, with an emphasis on harnessing international cooperation for sectorial STI priorities (diplomacy for Science) and how technical information has contributed to different policy developments and international structures (Science for diplomacy).

Programme Structure

A 2-month (8 weeks) blended programme combining online learning with an immersive in-person week in Nairobi.

Mandatory intensive on-campus immersion at the AAS Nairobi headquarters — no additional cost to participants.

Advanced modules, applied projects, simulations, and peer-to-peer learning.

Exams & Assessment

Final assessment, capstone presentations, and programme completion.
